Sunday May 23, 2010   ·   Tuesday With Everything In It comic

I may have neglected to mention this before, but if you’ve been to my main site, then you may already be aware of it — and if not, well, now’s my chance to tell you! My latest ongoing comic is Tuesday With Everything In It. It’s about a mercenary training facility masquerading as a boarding school, and still in its introducing-all-characters-to-you-readers stage, but I encourage you to check it out. Especially if you like humour, girls kicking tush, and moments of my-word-did-she-just-go-there.

On my art-desk right now

One of the first things you might note, right off the bat, is that the strip is handlettered as compared to my other comics. I do not have the neatest writing by far, and for a long time relied on computer-lettering for my comics — plus doing it by computer eased wrist and shoulder pain. In case you didn’t know, too much handlettering can really hurt a cartoonist, which is why a lot of graphic novelists turn their writing into fonts, so that they don’t have to actually handletter 275+ pages of comics!

After some thought, I decided to handletter my Tuesday strips. I’m doing so with as much thought and putting as little tension on my arm as possible, so hopefully I can continue doing so for the foreseeable future!

Anyway, if you’ve liked my previous comics such as Hugo & Bana, I think Tuesday With Everything In It would be right up your alley. Your really dark, offbeat alley.

Thursday March 11, 2010   ·   Book design: Plans

I’d never designed a book cover before, but when Natalie asked if I could design the front and back for her latest book Plans, I thought, “Hey, why not?” So I gave it a shot.

It’s always the first few tries that are tricky, because you’re trying to imagine the most appealing look for it. Then, at the very last minute, it hits you and you do a complete overhaul, and a look comes out. Natalie was plenty pleased with it, so I’m happy!

The design was completed in January. I’ve just gotten my very own copy of Plans, and man, even I’m impressed!

Thursday January 28, 2010   ·   Jupiter: The Play's the Thing, part 1

Hello, everybody! Guess what I’ve been quietly working on? A Jupiter comic! This story was partially inspired by my last year in college, when I was assistant stage manager (ASM) for one play and learned stage lighting in another. I’ve always enjoyed seeing how everything comes together behind the scenes, and this was no exception.

Here are the first five pages. The next five will be coming right up!

Thursday December 31, 2009   ·   Drapey, Dec 09

Found some of my Tria markers, and as I hadn’t used them for ages, I went through a few to see which had already dried up. Here’s a drapey sketch.

Wednesday December 30, 2009   ·   Josh Ritter, "Empty Hearts" 2009

This is what I sing to myself not just every turn-of-the-year, but whenever there’s need for reaffirmation.

Everyone should attend a Josh Ritter concert at least once.

Sunday December 13, 2009   ·   Art for MA, vid

Here’s what I inked today for a friend of mine over Ustream! For some reason, my webcam lends a blurry, Barbara-Walters-lighting sort of look to everything, so ‘pologies.

This, by the way, also features a cameo by the ever-adorable Sin.

And here’s what my friend is getting in the mail:
